  • since the Russian President Vladimir Putin declared an Easter ceasefire in the war with Ukraine.

  • It was 30 hours long and both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of breaching it.

  • Now the Kremlin has declared a further three-day ceasefire beginning on the 8th of May to coincide with events marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany.

  • As we record this podcast, Ukraine has said it wants an immediate ceasefire of at least 30 days,

  • while the White House has said President Trump wants a permanent ceasefire.

  • Our Europe regional editor Danny Eberhard gave me details of the Russian announcement.

  • Vladimir Putin says this is based on humanitarian considerations that will be greeted with a huge sigh of irony from Ukraine.

  • In a telegram post on social media by the Kremlin, they've given some more details.

  • So Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example.
