Let's have a look inside my kitchen bin.
The plastic wrapper from a chicken.
A bag that contained tortillas.
A crisp packet.
I don't think any of this will be recycled and I feel bad about that.
I'm sure
though this is a familiar scene and feeling in households around the world and companies are facing pressure from government legislation and consumers to make their packaging more sustainable.
So this week on The Food Chain from the BBC World Service with me Ruth Alexander,
we're speaking to a food manufacturer,
a retailer and a packaging designer about how they're trying to solve the problem.
As you'll hear it's not easy and the key to meaningful change may lie with us consumers.
First today our reporter Jessica Cruz has been asking people in Brazil one of the world's biggest plastic producers
if it matters to them when they're out shopping whether a product's packaging is sustainable.
Because we see that the company took care to think about the environment so it does have an influence.
Currently I would think about it.
I would check because I know it's worth it but in my economic circumstances it would wait on my budget.
The material, yes, like glass, plastic.
I always avoid buying as plastic as possible.
Are you willing to pay more for sustainable packaging?
