Hello and welcome to NewsHour.
It's coming to you live from the BBC World Service Studios in central London.
I'm Tim Franks.
It was nine hours ago
that Donald Trump pushed his red button and detonated what he himself has described as his explosive tariffs.
About 60 countries, again in the President's words,
the worst offenders will now see their imports to the United States heavily taxed.
None is steeper than the levies imposed on China,
as Mr Trump mused late last night at a Republican Party fundraising dinner.
Right now China is paying a 104 percent tariff.
Think of it, 104 percent.
Now it sounds ridiculous but they charge just for many items 100 percent, 125 percent.
Many countries have.
They've ripped us off left and right.
Until they make a deal with us, that's what it's going to be.
I think they'll make a deal at some point.
China will.
They want to make a deal.
They really do.
They want to make a deal.
