After US President Donald Trump imposed a baseline of 10% trade tariffs on most countries, more than 50 of those hit by the taxes have reportedly reached out to his administration to negotiate. US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, however, says steeper tariffs due to be imposed upon such nations will “of course” be implemented. We get reaction from an economist who served in the Biden administration.   • the Asian stock markets will reopen following the weekend break and after huge losses in global markets last week as President Trump's new tariffs were announced,

  • many will be hoping for a calmer time President Trump has urged US businesses to hang tough promising

  • that his tariff plan will deliver historic results,

  • for Americans at least.

  • But now

  • that more than 50 countries are individually trying to open negotiations with the Trump administration to do the deals Mr Trump himself says he wants,

  • can the Department of Commerce manage that workload,

  • especially as it's due to lose 20% of its workforce in planned doge cuts.

  • But the Sunday morning shows in the US today have been busy, US politicians have been lining up to have their say,

  • US agricultural secretary Brooke Rollins told CNN there would be a period of adjustment but that things would even out.

  • We are unleashing a new golden age and we will see an economy that will benefit not just every corner of America but our farmers and our ranchers and the people that have been left behind for far too long by both Republicans and Democrats.

  • Bilary Summers,

  • the former US Treasury secretary who worked for both President Clinton and Obama told ABC that tariffs were a disaster for the United States.

  • This is the biggest self-inflicted wound we've put on our economy and history.

  • We've never seen anything like this before and whether it's economic forecasts,

  • whether it's the stock market, whether it's Democrats making the forecast,

  • whether it's Republicans like Trump ally Ted Cruz making the forecast,
