Hello and welcome to the English-like native podcast.
My name is Anna and you're listening to week 59, day one of Your English Fiver Day.
This is the series that gives you a healthy,
daily dose of English vocabulary so
that you can feel more confident and more like yourself when communicating in English.
So let's begin today's list with the noun Santa, Santa, short for Santa Claus.
Santa we spell S-A-N-T-A.
And if we're going with the full version, Claus is C-L-A-U-S.
Santa Claus.
Now notice that we end Santa with this schwa sound, this week sound.
Even though the final letter in Santa is A, we don't say Santa, we say Santa, Santa.
So Santa is that imaginary old man who wears a red suit and he has a long white beard, a red hat.
He's rather large because he enjoys eating mince pies and he brings children presents on Christmas Eve,
if they've been good of course.
So here's an example sentence, have you written your letter to Santa yet?
We do have other names for Santa but for now I will just leave you with this one, Santa or Santa Claus.
What do you call him in your country?
Moving on from Santa we have the adjective boyish.
Boyish.
We spell this B-O-Y-I-S-H.
