  • And it was wonderful to listen to all those previous speakers as well.

  • I want to talk to you a bit about my new book, the Wager.

  • But in particular, I think for today,

  • I want to talk about research and the search for the truth and the way that research can shape a story and change a story,

  • and how that research can also lead you to places that you would never expect.

  • For example, one day several years ago, while doing research on this project,

  • I found myself on a small wood heated boat off the Chilean coast of Patagonia,

  • barreling through a gulf that is known as the Gulf of Pain.

  • It was storming and the ship was rocking side to side.

  • All I could see in front of us was this towering wave, and behind us another towering wave.

  • It was so the ship was being tossed about so violently that I did not dare stand.

  • I just hunkered down on the deck.

  • If I did stand, I might break a limb.

  • And in case you think I'm taking a little bit of liberty, liberty an exaggeration with the truth,

  • I have a video that I recorded while sitting there, which I can show you now.
