  • Hello, I'm Claudia Hammond.

  • Welcome to Health Check from the BBC.

  • I'm here for the next half an hour with the latest on health and medicine from around the world.

  • We'll explore the link between some common gynecological disorders and cardiovascular disease.

  • And I talk to the prize winning researcher trying to transform care

  • for marginalized people with schizophrenia in Guatemala.

  • And throughout today's show,

  • I'm joined by global health journalist and health chat regular Andrew Green.

  • Now, usually you join us from Berlin, but where are you today, Andrew?

  • So today I'm actually in Kampala, Uganda.

  • And what are you there looking at?

  • So I'm here looking at what is actually taking place on the ground with the collapse of US Global health funding,

  • focusing specifically on what the impact is on the HIV response in the country.

  • Now there are some developments on this with the news

  • that a federal judge in the US has blocked the Trump administration from taking any further steps to shut down the US Agency for International Development.

  • What has the judge said and what does this mean?

  • So he ruled that the dismantling of US Aid was likely unconstitutional

  • since it was done by Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency and they usurped the authority of the US Congress,

  • which both created the agency and then has the responsibility to close it if that's the decision.

  • So he said that at least part of the agency's operations need to be restored immediately,
