单集简介 ...

In just three months, Romania has gone from a stable and loyal member of the European Union and Nato, to a country where a far-right, pro-Russia figure has come from almost nowhere to become favourite for the presidency. A result which has sent shockwaves across the continent. In November Calin Georgescu, with no affiliated political party and whose campaign has been largely on social media, won the first round of Presidential elections in Romania. But then serious allegations surfaced over the legitimacy of Georgescu’s campaign, resulting in the Constitutional Court annulling the vote and Georgescu facing charges, which he strongly denies. Presidential hopefuls have until the 15 March to register their candidacy for the new elections, which are being rerun on 4 and 18 May. As protesters take to the streets of Bucharest, will the Romanian Constitutional Court rule that Georgescu can or cannot stand? If he is allowed to stand, can he become President? And how might the Romanian elections affect the future direction of the EU and Nato? • Welcome to the Inquiry with me, Tanya Beckett on the BBC World Service.

  • One question, four expert witnesses and an answer.

  • With more than 99% of the votes counted in the first round of Romania's presidential election,

  • a far right pro Russia candidate has taken the lead.

  • Kaline Jorgescu has an it was the shock election result that plunged Europe's six populous member state

  • into chaos

  • and sent ripples across the continent.

  • On 24 November last year,

  • the first round of presidential elections in Romania returned as winner a runner who had only weeks

  • before polled at less than 10% of the vote.

  • Kalyn Giorgescu, an independent candidate, had campaigned on a NATO skeptic,

  • anti EU platform

  • and now looked well positioned to win the runoff ballot to become Romania's next president.

  • Until, that is, there came another astonishing turn of events.

  • Serious allegations emerged over the legitimacy of Georgescu's campaign,

  • and the Constitutional Court annulled the vote.

  • Fresh elections were scheduled for May,

  • but it was far from certain whether Georgescu would be allowed to run again.

  • His supporters erupted onto the streets of the capital,

  • Bucharest, demanding that his election win be recognized.
