Maybe you've heard this in your place of work before, this idea that we're all family.
While working at a seasonal job as a teenager, I once overheard a colleague mention this.
We're more than co-workers.
We're a family.
It was during a team meeting and everyone nodded along.
But I couldn't help but wonder, is that really true?
Later that week, that same family let go of one of our team members without a second thought.
And that phrase stuck with me, this idea of a work family.
It sounds comforting, but is it real?
Can a workplace truly offer the safety and support of a family?
Or is it just a myth we tell ourselves to make the grind feel less lonely?
The concept of a work family is meant to foster a sense of safety and connection among employees,
but it often clashes with the realities of workplace dynamics.
Unlike real families, workplaces are bound by performance metrics, goals, and deadlines.
which can make unconditional love and acceptance impossible.
However, mindfulness can help us to examine our relationships, including those with coworkers,
through a lens of understanding and balance and learning how to honor differences without being divided by them.
