单集简介 ...

We are only just beginning to appreciate the healing power of music. In recent years, a wave of scientific research has upended everything we once knew about its effects on our brains: not only in reducing stress, but also in enhancing cognitive function, slowing the spread of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and even strengthening our immune systems. On January 21, Daniel Levitin, neuroscientist and musician, returned to Intelligence Squared to discuss this bold new paradigm for medical treatment, rooted in the unexpected influence of music on our minds and bodies. Drawing from his new book Music as Medicine he explained how ‘rhythmic auditory stimulation’ can fight multiple sclerosis, examined why Tracy Chapman’s songs might just help cure PTSD and offered surprising insights into the new science of music as medicine. -------------- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. • Welcome to Intelligence Squared, where great minds meet.

  • I'm head of Programming Connor Boyle.

  • Today's episode is part two of our recent live event in London's Smith Square hall with Daniel Leviton.

  • He's a neuroscientist, musician and author of the new book Music as Medicine, How We Can Harness Its Therapeutic Power.

  • He was joined in conversation by journalist and broadcaster Riddle as Shaft, and music was played by violinist Anna Mitchell.

  • If you are an Intelligence Squared plus subscriber, you can get access to the full conversation right now.

  • Now, without further ado, let's go to the episode.

  • Anna, I think you were going to play us a piece that was going to talk about the relationship of music and pain.

  • It's a piece called Rochine Dove.

  • Let's hear a little bit of Sa.

  • Sa.

  • So just tell us a little bit about it.

  • You explained the piece really beautifully earlier.

  • Thank you.

  • Yeah.

  • So it's called Rotine Dove and it's a really old Irish song, very popular back in.

  • Well, it's from the 16th century, but it basically means Black Rose and it's a love song.

  • But I suppose the love song is a bit of a disguise for Ireland.

  • And the song is about Ireland and one's love for one's country.

  • Yeah.
