  • And we're going to begin today in the United States and what might be described as an avalanche of presidential pardons in the past few days from the outgoing President Joe Biden, and of course, the new occupant of the White house, Donald Trump.

  • Mr.

  • Trump had barely got his feet under the Oval Office desk before issuing a near blanket pardon for more than 1500 of his supporters who stormed Congress on January 6th four years ago.

  • He described their sentences as ridiculous and excessive.

  • At a news conference in Washington, he was asked where the rioters who attacked police officers should be held to account.

  • He replied saying they should, but added that their sentences could be shortened.

  • They've served years in jail and murderers don't even go to jail in this country.

  • And we had 1500.

  • We have 16 under review.

  • As you know, we commuted about 16 of them because it looks like they could have done things that were not acceptable for a full pardon.

  • No, we pardoned people that were treated unbelievably poorly.

  • In the history of our country, there's never been anything take place like this.

  • There's one conviction which has been overturned, which is raising a lot of eyebrows, and it's the unconditional pardon given to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the dark web marketplace Silk Road.
