  • This is the Guardian.

  • Today, the Los Angeles fires and a warning to the world about life in a new climate.

  • Marketing information.

  • When a wildfire broke out a few miles from his home in Altadena, in the hills north of Los Angeles, George El Maraghi waited for the order to evacuate.

  • But it never came.

  • The fire was faster.

  • We were just home waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting.

  • And then finally I got up on the roof and I saw the fire nearby a couple of streets over.

  • I saw like the mountain burning.

  • So you just see this like line of fire that's just getting closer and closer and closer to you.

  • And at that point, when I saw the fire, like from our backyard, like almost parallel to our house, I was like, okay, we gotta go.

  • We're not gonna wait for this any longer.

  • Like, we gotta go now.

  • He piled his young family into the car, grabbing what they could out the door, and drove to his brother Matthew's house.

  • They were safe, but they had left so much behind.

  • And Matthew and George decided they needed to salvage what they could.

  • They needed to drive back towards the fire.

  • Here's Matthew.

  • I mean, it's just, there's no visibility whatsoever and it's kind of chaos.

  • There's like, people are trying to respect traffic laws and stay in single file order, but everyone is also scrambling.
