"Osteoporosis is real and 50 percent of women will have an osteoporotic fracture before they die. If you fall and break your hip, your chance of death in one year is 30 percent with surgery." - Dr. Mary Claire Haver In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Mary Claire Haver delivers crucial insights about women's health that challenge conventional thinking about fitness and aging. She reveals how the focus on being thin in our 20s and 30s could be setting women up for serious health challenges later in life, explaining that muscle mass and bone density peak around age 30. Through compelling medical evidence and personal experience, Dr. Haver emphasizes the critical importance of strength training and protein intake, particularly as women approach menopause, when the loss of muscle and bone accelerates dramatically. Dr. Haver also explores the complex relationship between menopause and major life changes, including divorce. She shares fascinating insights about how this transitional period often becomes a catalyst for women to prioritize their own wellbeing, sometimes for the first time. Drawing from her clinical experience and conversations with divorce attorneys, she unpacks the surprising statistics about marriage satisfaction between genders and the various factors that contribute to relationship changes during menopause, including depression, cognitive changes, and sexual health concerns.

  • Hi, my name is Lewis Howes and welcome to the Daily Motivation Show.

  • What is the biggest risk women have in their 20s and 30s about trying to stay thin and skinny versus strong and healthy?

  • So it's hard for them to see it because they're 20, right?

  • And they feel good and they look great.

  • They feel like they look great because the clothes are, you know.

  • And but what they're not seeing is we peak our muscle mass and our bone density at about age 30.

  • Wow.

  • And it's that musculoskeletal unit is tied together.

  • And so you have to the wherever that line is for you,

  • we start losing muscle and bone mass after age 30.

  • And menopause accelerates that when we lose estrogen and testosterone,

  • like Matt, we start losing it really fast.

  • How much harder is it for you to gain muscle now?

  • Oh my God.

  • It is so hard.

  • I mean, it's literally every day I'm like looking at my plate and I'm like protein, plants,

  • fiber, you know,

  • I'm I'm not even caring about calories and I'm totally changed the way I move my body.

  • Really?

  • Weightlifting.
