Hi friends, Rosie here.
Welcome to Radio Headspace.
Something I love about good friends is that there's always something new to learn.
Recently, I was at a little barbecue in LA.
And my friend, that I've known for a while,
told a story about getting attacked by a shark when they were younger.
He showed the scars, he told the whole story, and the fact he survived was remarkable.
But what struck me the most was that this guy still swims in the ocean.
I couldn't help but ask him, how on earth did you go back in the water?
He looked at me.
shrugged, and said that he had always known there were risks with deep-sea fishing,
accepting that possibility was just part of being in the ocean.
Within a year, he was back in the water.
That perspective absolutely floored me.
This wasn't just courage.
It was a powerful example of amor fati, or love of fate.
Amor fati is a Stoic idea about embracing every part of life,
whether it's joyful or painful, as essential to our story.
Rather than resisting challenges,
Stoics believe in seeing each hardship as an opportunity for growth and a chance to live fully in acceptance.
