Hi there, I'm Sumi Somaskanda from the BBC World Service.
This is the global story.
More than a year after the war in Gaza began, the horrors of the conflict are continuing in 2025.
Death, hunger and cold continue to blight the lives of 2 million Palestinians.
And the families of Israeli hostages still being held in Gaza continue to hope for news of their safe return.
Repeated attempts at peace talks have failed, but with the arrival of Donald Trump as the new US President in less than two weeks, could this be a moment that a peace deal finally succeeds?
With me today is our Gaza correspondent Rushdie Abu Alouf, who is currently in Istanbul.
Hi Rushdie.
Hello, Rushdie.
Hamas officials have shared a list with the BBC with you of 34 hostages that the group says it is willing to release in the first stage of a potential ceasefire agreement with Israel.
What can you tell us about this list?
Well, I think the list is not new.
It's been handed over to Hamas last July and Hamas has approved some of the names, but they were all the time rejecting to release 11 names out of this 34 because they said those people between the age of 18 and 50, they are considered as soldiers and we want a different price for releasing them.
What happened this time is that the list was submitted to Hamas again about two weeks ago and now what?
