  • Hello and welcome to World Business Report from the BBC World Service.

  • I'm Sam Fenwick.

  • Today we're reflecting on the highs and lows of the entertainment industry in 2024.

  • We'll look at the roller coaster year for blockbuster films.

  • I mean, we set a lot of records last year, but it was really a year of feast and famine.

  • The incredible Taylor Swift effect that set the music world on fire.

  • Because the artists make more money from touring than from their recorded music.

  • They want to be on the road.

  • And the unfortunate wave of layoffs which have hit the gaming industry.

  • 2024 is as much as 2021, 2022 and 2023 all combined.

  • It's really escalating, which is a very troubling pattern that I'm seeing.

  • Plus, we'll look ahead to 2025.

  • But first today let's it looks like the flow of Russian gas through Ukraine is about to come to an end.

  • The pipeline, one of the last two still transporting Russian gas to Europe, will stop operating on Wednesday.

  • This means EU countries will lose around 5% of their gas imports right in the middle of winter.

  • The agreement for Russian gas to pass through Ukraine was agreed in 2019.

  • Ending the deal could lead to a 6.5 billion dollar loss loss for Russia unless it manages to find an alternative route.

  • That's according to a Brussels think tank called Bruegel.

  • Until February 2022, Sergey Vacalenka served as head of strategy and innovation at Gazprom Neft, Russia's state owned energy company.
