  • In what feels like a significant escalation in the political standoff that's affecting Georgia in the caucuses, the US has imposed sanctions on the country's former prime minister.

  • Bidzina Ivanishvili is the billionaire founder of Georgia's ruling party and its richest citizen.

  • The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has accused him of eroding democratic institutions, of enabling rights abuses, and in the words of the secretary of state, derailing Georgia's euro Atlantic future.

  • All of which he says leaves the country vulnerable to Russia.

  • Well, the US Move comes more than two months after the country's disputed elections and there have been almost daily protests like this one since then in the capital, with protesters using fireworks against and against the water cannons of the riot police who aligned against them.

  • There have been hundreds of arrests.
