  • The death toll after a powerful 7.4 earthquake in Colombia

  • has risen to 111. Local officials say they expect that number to rise.

  • People remain trapped under collapsed buildings in several cities in western Colombia,

  • including in the city of Cali, with more than 2 million residents.

  • NPR's Kerry Kahn reports.

  • The strong quake struck early Monday morning, rattling buildings

  • and homes in the Choco region, some 150 miles west of the Colombian capital, Bogota.

  • The USGS at the Temblor struck at a depth of 66 miles.

  • Posting on social media, the governor of Choco says there are reports of, quote,

  • multiple injuries and severe damage to the buildings.

  • Some 140,000 people live in Cuibdo, the capital of the region.

  • Video on local TV from cities in the region show collapsed building and major damage to a regional airport.

  • The quake comes more than a month after two strong back-to-back earthquakes hit neighboring Venezuela,

  • killing more than 5,000 people and destroying hundreds of buildings.
