Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service.
Coming live from London, this is Owen Bennett Jones.
And coming up in a minute, we'll be heading to Germany, where a car has been driven at people enjoying a Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg.
Also today, the US Congress has voted to avoid a government shutdown.
What has that told us about President Elect Trump's relationship with Republicans on Capitol Hill and how the civil war in Syria affected musicians there?

Shortly after the attack, police detained the driver of the car and here's the moment they arrested him.
Lars Fruhotmuller from the local public broadcaster MDR told the BBC what he'd seen.
Everywhere were ambulances, there were police, there were a lot of fireworkers.
