Valentine’s Day ‘97

For Valentine's Day, stories about our parents falling in love. And troubles with their love. From Hilton Als, Scott Carrier, Julie Showalter, a magazine column called Men My Mother Dated and others. The idea for this show was inspired by Delmore Schwartz's classic 1937 work of American fiction about his parents' courtship: In Dreams Begin Responsibilities and Other Stories. Prologue: Ira reads from In Dreams Begin Responsibilities. (7 minutes) Lighten Up: Brett Leveridge reads from his column for Might magazine, which he turned into the book Men My Mother Dated and Other Mostly True Tales. (9 minutes) Mom, Dad, Bats: A story by Bia Lowe. (12 minutes) It's Not the Heat: Writer Julie Showalter on her parents' romance. (7 minutes) Negress: Hilton Als reads an excerpt from his book The Women. (12 minutes) Parent And Child: Reporter Scott Carrier and his eleven-year-old daughter Jesse. Scott wrote Running After Antelope. (8 minutes)
