单集简介 ...

People staring squarely at the truth, and still finding it hard to believe what they’re seeing. Prologue: Two co-workers notice something off about the new guy at work. They think they know what it is, but it seems too strange to be true. (6 minutes) She Blinded Us With Science: Producer Chana Joffe-Walt talks to researcher Mary Koss about how she came to see a thing that others couldn’t, and about what she did with that knowledge. (15 minutes) How the Other Side Leaves: Reporter James Spring visits a refugee camp in Tijuana, Mexico filled with Ukranians fleeing the war. James is no stranger to refugee camps in Mexico, but still finds it hard to believe what he's seeing. (18 minutes) We Did Start the Fire: Sometimes even when you live through something, it can be hard to see it for what it is. Reporter Katie Worth has a story about a 7th-grader in that position. (15 minutes) Katie reported this story for the PBS series Frontline and the Ground Truth Project. She is the author of the book Miseducation: How Climate Change Is Taught In America.

  • A quick warning.

  • There are curse words that are unbeeped in today's episode of the show.

  • If you prefer a beeped version, you can find that at our website, thisamericanlife.org the new guy had been there for a month, and he was coming to meetings all the time.

  • And the meetings were on Zoom, but he never turned on his camera.

  • One of his co workers, Phil, says, that wasn't a big deal.

  • Lots of people do that.

  • This was a tech startup.

  • Maybe it's just engineers.

  • Maybe it's our company culture.

  • Like, I always have my camera off.

  • But then his fourth week on the job, the new guy turned it on.

  • And then that's when I was like, what the?

  • Like, who is this guy?

  • And when you say, who is this guy?

  • Why?

  • What were you seeing versus what you were expecting to see?

  • Well, so when I interviewed him, he had his camera on, and literally he looked different.

  • Like, physically just different.

  • Also, during the job interview, every time this guy would answer a question, he'd give this big smile.

  • Like, it was almost as if he was, like, tying a bow around his answer.
