单集简介 ...

When it comes to finding love, there seems to be two schools of thought on the best way to go about it. One says, wait for that lightning-strike magic. The other says, make a calculation and choose the best option available. Who has it right? Prologue: When guest host Tobin Low was looking for a husband, he got opposing advice from two of the most important people in his life, his mom and his best friend. (8 minutes) 10 Things I Require About You: Zarna Garg had a clear plan for how she was going to find a husband. Things did not go as she expected.  (17 minutes) Crazy Stupid Love: People who fall in love at first sight often describe it as a kind of magic. One of our producers, Aviva DeKornfeld, is skeptical of these sorts of claims. And also a little envious. (10 minutes) He’s All That: Calvin is an 11 year old who is learning what love is all about, the hard way. (7 minutes) How To Leave a Guy in 10 Days: Writer Marie Phillips believes that magic is not just reserved for the beginning of a relationship. In fact, she says the real magic can be found  in the end, once you decide to finally leave. (8 minutes) Coda: Tobin Low tells us which camp he falls in — math or magic. (2 minutes)

  • A quick warning.

  • There are curse words that are unbeeped in today's episode of the show.

  • If you prefer a beeped version, you can find that at our website, thisamericanlife.org from WBEZ Chicago, it's this American Life.

  • I'm Tobin Lowe, sitting in for Hourglass.

  • There's a story in my family that I love.

  • It's actually a story about love, and it's one that I both fully enjoy and is also the source of many years of romantic frustration.

  • It starts with my mom as a teenager growing up in San Francisco, Chinatown.

  • A woman at the church she went to comes up to her one day.

  • And says, I have a nephew who's just perfect for you, and I'm going to set up this date.

  • I mean, you're just made for each other.

  • You have to meet each other.

  • And she was determined to make that happen.

  • Maybe you can see where this is going.

  • This is, in fact, my very own How I Met yout Father story.

  • Anyway, my parents were both invited to a party where they could see each other for the first time.

  • So there's a room full of people, and I don't know which one he's going to be.

  • And so I'm sort of scanning the room and I look at some people and think, oh, well, maybe that one has a really good personality.

  • So you're saying there were some real uggos in the room?

  • Well, they were just, you know, they probably have a great personality.

  • And so when I finally got introduced to him, I just was so, so relieved that he was good looking.
