The Israeli prime minister says he's ready for direct negotiations with Lebanon, as Iran says the continuing Israeli attacks on Lebanon violate Iran's ceasefire with the US. We hear the latest from Israel, Lebanon and the US. Also in the programme: the UK says three Russian submarines have conducted a "covert" operation over Britain's vital underwater cables and pipelines; and as the crew of the Integrity spacecraft on the Artemis II mission around the Moon hurtle back towards Earth, we hear from the wife of the Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. • Hello and welcome to NewsHour.

  • It's coming to you live from the BBC World Service studios in central London.

  • I'm Tim Franks.

  • And coming up later on the programme is the crew of Artemis II hurtles back towards Earth from its moon mission

  • after travelling further into space than anyone else.

  • We'll hear from the wife of the Canadian astronaut, Jeremy Hansen.

  • When Jeremy's back safely, we will absolutely come together.

  • First, just the five of us, you know, in a very quiet environment.

  • And then we will absolutely celebrate with the world.

  • That's coming up in just under 20 minutes.

  • Before that, though, pretty much as soon as the tenuous ceasefire was announced between the US and Iran two days ago,

  • one of the key questions was whether this fragile two-week pause would survive Israel's continuing assault on Lebanon

  • in its war against the Iran-allied Hezbollah militia.

  • Indeed, as you 'll probably be aware, there were very different views about whether Israel's offensive

  • was covered by this ceasefire deal.

  • The Israelis, and it seemed the Americans, were saying not.

  • The Iranians and the Pakistani facilitators for the scheduled peace talks and many other members

  • of the international community said yes.

  • Well, this evening Israel Tyne, despite the Israeli military launching a new wave of attacks inside Lebanon,

  • the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, grabbed the headlines with a statement posted on social media.
