A federal judge has found that a data tool the Trump administration has created is unlawful.
It's been used to verify voter eligibility by aggregating Americans' personal information.
NPR's Jude Jaffe Block explains more than 60 million voters have already been run through this data system.
Last spring, the Trump administration overhauled a Department of Homeland Security data system known as SAVE,
linking it to social security data to create a citizenship lookup tool.
The Trump administration has promoted SAVE as a way to verify voters' eligibility,
but SAVE has erroneously flagged eligible Americans as potential non-citizens.
Now a federal judge has ruled the changes to SAVE violated federal laws,
and the tool in its current form can no longer be used.
The decision was celebrated by by voting rights and privacy advocates.
A Department of Justice statement says it will continue to aggressively defend
the president's immigration enforcement agenda and DHS's use of safe.
