Iran's newly named Supreme Leader has released his first statement.
Ayatollah Mujtaba Khamenei says Iran should continue to control the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has effectively shut down oil shipping through that narrow body of water.
The statement, delivered across Iranian official media,
was accompanied by a still photo of Khamenei.
It was read in Farsi by a newsreader on Iranian official media.
It is heard here through an interpreter on CNN.
He was chosen by Iranian clerics to take over the Supreme Leader's job after his father,
the former Supreme Leader, was killed on the first day of the war.
In his remarks today, he also said Iran would continue striking bases in the Persian Gulf region.
The war also continues in Lebanon.
Iran's proxy militia Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel.
Israel is also attacking parts of Lebanon.
Israel has been telling people to flee.
Some 800,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon.
Stocks opened lower this morning as oil prices topped $90 a barrel.
NPR's Scott Horsley reports the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 500 points in early trading.
News the U.S.
and other countries plan to tap their emergency stockpiles of crude oil did little to slow the rise in prices.
