Hi there.
I'm Mayra Anubi and this week on People Fixing the World.
I'm taking you back to the archives to hear a program that we did last year and it's all about innovative things people are doing with empty shopping malls.
People Fixing.
People Fixing the World.
Welcome to People Fixing the World from the BBC World Service.
I'm Mayra Anubi, and on this program I get to tell you about projects that are working to make our world a better place.
Today we're looking at the US Where I'll be asking a question that you've probably never considered before.
What do you do with an empty shopping mall?
Growing up, I would watch many American movies where teenagers would hang out in malls with their friends, grab a milkshake and then maybe go buy these trendy clothes.
There was something really cool about being in those massive malls with fancy shops, restaurants and other fun activities.
I'd like to see you have a little bit of direction.
I have direction, yeah, towards the mall.
In the 1995 film Clueless, when the privileged airhead Cher is feeling sad about her poor grades, she opts for a little retail therapy.
I felt impotent and out of control.
Which I really hate.
I needed to find sanctuary in a.
Place where I could gather my thoughts.
And regain my strength.
At this point, the film cuts to an exterior shot of the Westside Pavilion Mall in Los Angeles.
