  • We had a body and strong reason to believe that the circumstances of death were suspicious,

  • but nothing firm and no suspect and no motive for a killing.

  • We were waiting on forensics for the time of death and the like.

  • Forensics just don't get back to you on the day like they do on TV.

  • There's almost always a backlog and chemical tests take time, so we were a bit stuck.

  • To be honest, there was a good chance this case might be taken off us,

  • unless we made progress.

  • We really needed the time of death because somebody paid that ransom.

  • either before or after Jamie died.

  • And if it was after, then it had to be murder.

  • As soon as it was confirmed to be a murder investigation,

  • it would be taken over by someone more senior, in all likelihood.

  • But, at this point, I was still in charge,

  • so I tried something I'd read about being used by the police in Canada.

  • I'm a big believer in police forces around the world sharing knowledge and expertise.

  • I try and read up as much as I can.

  • Anyway,

  • I got us all into the interview room for a brainstorming session and I recorded it.
