单集简介 ...

Is the idea of a pristine landscape an illusion, given that over thousands of years human activity has almost everywhere left its mark? Bridget Kendall asks the gardener Gilly Drummond, the land artist Danae Stratou, the archaeobotanist Dorian Fuller, and the historian William Beinart. • Welcome to the forum from the BBC.

  • Hello, I'm Bridget Kendall.

  • Picture a beautiful English landscape with rolling green hills,

  • magnificent trees and a flowing lake,

  • an idyllic setting which looks as if it's been around forever.

  • But then you find out that this is an illusion and in fact it's all man-made.

  • And that's what you'd find

  • if you visited one of the gardens created by the man who's probably Britain's best-known landscape gardener,

  • Capability Brown, born 300 years ago this year.

  • And it's his skill in being able to tame nature to make it more efficient as well as more pleasing to the eye,

  • which is the starting point for this programme.

  • What lies behind man's apparently perpetual desire to control and perfect the natural landscape?
