单集简介 ...

From the horrors of human suffering and plunder of ancient artefacts in war to the reshaping of musical traditions, we examine the notion of things lost and found. British journalist Julian Borger reflects on the unmasking of some of the most notorious Balkan war criminals, Iraqi archaeologist Dr Lamia al-Gailani Werr mourns the loss of ancient relics in modern conflict and American pianist Bruce Brubaker deconstructs modern minimalist music. • Welcome to the forum from the BBC with me, Brigitte Kendall.

  • Today our subject is Lost and Found.

  • That was from Mad Rush by the contemporary American composer Philip Glass.

  • And why is that relevant to our theme?

  • Well, we all suffer loss in our lives when we lose a loved one,

  • a cherished possession or when a memory fades.

  • And sometimes loss can make you stronger,

  • increasing your insight into yourself and the world around you.

  • And arguably that's what Philip Glass' compositions aim to do,

  • stripping out classical musical embellishments and conventions to encourage us to listen differently.

  • But does loss always mean finding something new or other times when it simply leaves a black hole for those caught up in the horrors of war,

  • for instance, or other traumatic violence?
