  • that the invention of the wheel is one of human civilisation's greatest achievements.

  • Well, maybe.

  • A wheel is certainly useful for a potter or for drawing water from a well.

  • But to move things and people about, you usually need more than one wheel,

  • plus a way of securely attaching it to the thing you want to move.

  • And when speed is a consideration, then you need decent roads, too.

  • As so often happens, the invention itself is one thing.

  • But when it comes to its uses, the story is more complicated.

  • So today, we're going to take a fresh look at one important way of using wheels.
