It's often been said
that the invention of the wheel is one of human civilisation's greatest achievements.
Well, maybe.
A wheel is certainly useful for a potter or for drawing water from a well.
But to move things and people about, you usually need more than one wheel,
plus a way of securely attaching it to the thing you want to move.
And when speed is a consideration, then you need decent roads, too.
As so often happens, the invention itself is one thing.
But when it comes to its uses, the story is more complicated.
So today, we're going to take a fresh look at one important way of using wheels.
