Last time on the Happiness Lab, we brought you the story of listener Rebecca Kaduru.
Rebecca was involved in an awful car accident while living in Uganda.
As my husband tried to swerve,
our car ended up rolling probably seven or eight times and landed in a tree.
And when she came to a few hours later, her face was smashed beyond recognition.
I had broken my nose, I had broken my jaw,
and I had shattered both my eye socket, the external part, and the internal part.
Her recovery was difficult and painful, with lots of setbacks and disappointments.
There was something very weird happening with my left eye,
where it really looked like it was kind of sunken back.
Back in the US and in between reconstructive surgeries.
Rebecca began listening to the Happiness Lab while taking her daily walk.
One day, she heard our episode with an Army veteran, J.R.
Martinez, who was badly burned while serving in Iraq.
I look at myself and I'm like, that's not cute what I see in the mirror.
The old J.R.
had died.
His words had an immediate impact.
Tears just burst out of my eyes and I like collapsed onto my knees on the sidewalk.
