单集简介 ...

With Donald Trump now declared winner of the 2024 presidential race, the United States stands on the brink of a new era. Yet, as New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas Friedman has warned, the implications of Trump’s ambitious agenda may be far from harmonious. Trump has vowed to end the war in Ukraine on his first day in office, impose tariffs on China, and pressure Israel to conclude the war in Gaza. But will these bold promises stabilise global tensions — or further stoke them? In November 2024, Friedman returned to the Intelligence Squared stage in London for his first appearance since the pandemic. In conversation with broadcaster Ritula Shah he explored whether Trump’s policies will serve America’s interests or undermine its alliances and role in global affairs. • Welcome to Intelligence Squared, where great minds meet.

  • I'm producer Leila Ishmael.

  • Our guest on the podcast today is Thomas Friedman, the renowned author, reporter and columnist.

  • Friedman has won three Pulitzers for both his international reporting from the Middle east and for his regular columns published in the New York Times, where he often writes about foreign affairs, globalization and technology.

  • His books include From Beirut to Jerusalem, the Lexus and the Olive Tree, and more recently, thank you for being late.

  • He was live on Stage just yesterday, 19th November 2024 at London's Emanuel Centre for our Intelligence Squared Live event to discuss the recent US election and the future of America in the world.

  • Joining him to discuss it all was the journalist and broadcaster Ritala Shah.

  • Good evening everyone.

  • Welcome to Intelligence Square.

  • Thank you so much for braving the weather tonight.

  • It's really extraordinarily cold and indeed the protests in Westminster.

  • I'm really glad we could all come together.

  • There used to be a conversation in British journalism which possibly has never really gone away, that we Speak spent far too much time discussing American politics and really not enough time perhaps discussing the shenanigans that were going on amongst our continental neighbors.

  • The coverage remains just as lopsided now as it's ever been, but I think it's very difficult to argue at the moment about the consequential and very urgent nature of US politics.

  • The election of Donald Trump on indeed our future and that of the rest of the world.

  • What will Donald Trump's uncompromising MAGA agenda mean for conflicts and rivalries that are burning longstanding around the world?
