  • BBC Sounds Music Radio podcasts so history has been made.

  • It's 120 days since Rishi Sunak announced he was quitting and we have a new Conservative leader.

  • Take it away, Bob Blackman.

  • The result was Kebby Badenoch 53,806 votes, and Robert Jenrick 41,388.

  • Therefore, I give notice that Kebby Badenuk.

  • Is elected as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party.

  • Isn't it great that we've got another.

  • Female leader, Bob Blackman there, not the new Tory leader, but the boss of.

  • Of the Tories 1922 Committee, the organization of backbenchers that runs elections like this, announcing that Kemi Badenoch has won the Tory crown.

  • Henry and Chris, you were both there.

  • Henry, what was it like in the room?

  • There was a proper crackle of excitement, I think, and nerves, real nerves, because for all that, a lot of people felt there was conventional wisdom here that Kemi Paidnok was gonna win.

  • And that conventional wisdom turned out to be correct.

  • No one knew there hadn't been loads of polls, not really any proper polls, actually, in the final two of the Conservative membership.

  • So I think a lot of people really didn't know how this was gonna play out.

  • And it's not actually that often in British politics that you get moments like that, especially in leadership elections, which maybe come around a little more frequently in the Conservative Party than they used to, but they're still notionally quite rare.

  • It was just undeniably a big moment.

  • And the energy in the room reflected that.
