  • My name is Tim Burrows.

  • I'm the author of The Rubbish Scopes of Essex, Why Our Buried Trash is Back to Haunt Us,

  • which was published by The Long Read in 2023 and was an edited

  • extract of a chapter of my book, The Invention of Essex.

  • The piece is about how parts of Essex were used as dumping grounds for London,

  • in some cases illegal dumping grounds for London's waste,

  • and what that might have said about the county itself and its relationship with the establishment.

  • It was actually a story that was quite a long time coming for me.

  • And it was first brought to my attention by my father-in-law, who was a keen angler.

  • He used to tell me about some clay pits,

  • which filled with water and became a sort of beautiful area of Essex where he used to fish.
