  • Been a very busy news weekend, and there was a world when there was no podcast on Sunday, and now everything seems to happen at the weekend because we had the prime minister on the chair where you sit, and then we had the sudden death of Alex Salmond.

  • And of course, all the global events that are going on, too.

  • That's right.

  • And the passing of Alex Salmond is a hugely significant political event, not just to mark his massive influence on scottish and uk politics, but also somebody who'd been a fixture of politics for a very, very long time, you know, several decades, with a career of lots of very significant highs and also lots of very significant lows, but somebody who had been around part of the political fabric for a very, very long time.

  • Memories, Henry well, I kind of missed his heyday.

  • I didn't cover the scottish independence referendum in particular, and I've never been based in Scotland.

  • But I do remember when he returned to Westminster in 2015, from 2015 to 2017, with that massive group of Scottish National Party MP's.

  • And I remember how visibly he loved being in the House of Commons, which is probably a bit of a paradox, given that he obviously wanted there to be no Scottish MP's in the House of Commons, ultimately.

  • But it was very striking how he relished debate and, frankly, winding his opponents up, but often through rhetoric as much as through disagreement.

  • And that is definitely something that I remember about how he approached politics.

  • And I think that's probably why, actually, there's a striking amount of respect mixed in with the other more complicated aspects of the tributes to him from his political opponents over the last day.

  • I mean, I'm struck by what you both say there, because I can remember that Brio in parliament and that amazing life force that all those s and P members were.
