  • Discussion keeps the world turning.

  • This is round table.

  • Hello.

  • Welcome to Roundtable, where we serve up piping hot debates on the issues that sizzle in China and beyond.

  • Im Liu Hong ling.

  • Time to sharpen your pencils.

  • Or maybe just charge your tablets, because in this special episode were going back to school.

  • As part of our series marking the 75 years of Chinas transformation, today were focusing on education.

  • From dusty textbooks and wooden desks to online learning and AI tutors, the way China learns has come a long way.

  • So whether you are a star student or prefer the back row, get ready for an education in how Chinas classrooms have kept pace with the countrys rapid growth.

  • For todays show, Im joined by Yu Shan and Steve Hatherley.

  • Now grab your virtual compass and follow us to the heart of the discussion.

  • After continuous effort, China has built the world's largest high quality education system.

  • There have been nearly 500,000 schools of all levels and types teaching 291 million students in China as of 2023.

  • The reason we're doing this kind of like a fact check thing is because when it comes to education, we've come a long way, and all three of us have received education in different times, in different ways.

  • And it's fun to take a look in different countries, in different countries as well.

  • Yeah, definitely.

  • And it's fun to take a look at what education has been in almost ancient times, especially here in China, and what has it been like or what it is like now.

  • And we've been doing several episodes of this series, and it has been really fun, not only because we dig out a lot of fun memories and talked about many anecdotes in different themes.

  • Also because I feel like with this special show, we find a way to kind of like streamline or put in place some of the facts that we felt worth sharing to not only audience in China, but also overseas audiences.
