Today, we look at Michel Barnier’s surprise selection as French Prime Minister, and a “historic success” for the far-right in Germany. The EU’s former Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, has been named as the new French prime minister in a surprise announcement by Emmanuel Macron. But will this finally break the deadlock in Paris? And, Germany’s anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) has won the election in the eastern state of Thuringia. But how much of a threat are they to the current government? • BBC sounds music radio podcasts.

  • Hello.

  • I feel we should call this an emergency episode of Brexit.

  • Cast, our predecessor, Brexit themes podcast, because Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator then, has today been named by Emmanuel Macron as his candidate to be the new prime minister of France, the result of a lot of political wrangling in Paris.

  • Now, I've gone back through the archives to chart my relationship with Michel Barnier, and where best to look than his own book, his secret Brexit Diary, where I appear not once, not twice, but three times.

  • Shall we read them out?

  • Okay.

  • Oh, if you insist.

  • Right.

  • November 2018.

  • He says, we know that the situation in London is extremely fragile.

  • When Adam Fleming of the BBC asks me, so, are you gonna have some champagne?

  • I answer, certainly not.

  • We're going to drink water and continue with our work.

  • Classic Michelle.

  • I used to do that every time there was a big milestone.

  • You can have a glass of champagne.

  • He'd say no every time.

  • Right.

  • I'm not sure which date this is.
