Germany says it's introducing strict new controls at all its land borders to combat illegal migration and counter the threat of islamist extremism.
The country's interior minister, Nancy Fezer, said the measures would come into force next week.
She announced the move at a news conference in Berlin.
This will further limit irregular migration and protect against the acute dangers posed by islamist terror and serious crime.
We are doing everything in order to better protect the people of our country against this.
That includes the far reaching measures I am taking now to find out what lies behind the new approach, I've been talking to our correspondent in Berlin, Damon McGinnis.
Germany already has controls at many of its borders, so particularly east and southern borders, such as Poland, Czechia, Switzerland.
