Now, during this winter holiday season, there is a trend that is gaining momentum in China with a large number of college students and young adults returning home not just to celebrate the Spring Festival holiday, but to take on the responsibilities of caring for their nieces and nephews.
And they are given a nickname, Du Hua.
How are these young individuals navigating the challenges of babysitting?
What's viewing this emerging trend and what insights does it offer into the evolving nature of family relationships in China?
To answer all that questions, let's first start with the who, what and why of Dehua.
Sure, I'll give some of the background information here.
So Dehua is the name of a character from the 2014 Chinese TV drama called Romance of Our Parents in Chinese, Fu Mu AI Qing.
And this drama revolves around the 50 year relationship between the two protagonists who overcome their differences in background and then get married and raise five children over these several decades.
So in this drama, Aunt Jiang Dehua, who is the younger sister of the male protagonist, she often helps to take care of her nephews and nieces.
