  • Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Dwali Saikowtao.

  • President Trump says Iran should pay the U.S.

  • Reparations for five decades of pain and suffering, including, quote, all of the people

  • that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts.

  • His threat comes after Iran demanded the U.S.

  • End its blockade of Iranian imports, live sanctions, release frozen assets held by the Islamic Republic,

  • and compensate for war damage.

  • And Piers Franco Ordonez reports.

  • It was just a week ago that Trump was touting great progress, as he has before,

  • and even boasted that he would soon be announcing an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

  • That's obviously not happening now.

  • Instead, he's signaling a change in tactics, saying he's going to be low-king negotiations, calling it a chess match,

  • and saying he's going to focus on economic pressure, and also getting into this public spat about compensation.

  • It all just does not project a terrible amount of confidence that a deal is around the corner.

  • NPR's Franco Ordonez reporting.

  • Some voters in Alabama will be casting ballots today for a second time in a congressional primary.

  • NPR's Debbie Elliott reports the special election comes after the Supreme

  • Court removed race as a consideration for drawing districts, but allowed for gerrymandering.

  • The map, approved by the Republican-controlled legislature,

  • creates a more difficult path to re-election for the two black Democrats in Alabama's congressional delegation.
