14 分钟Max Strasser: I'm Max Strasser.
I'm the editor of The New York Times Sunday opinion section.
In October, I was actually at the very beginning of a four–month parental leave.
And it was a hard time for me to be away from work.
I've covered Israel–Palestine for a long time.
It's something that I think about and care about a lot.
I was really in a state of shock –
first at the events of October, and then at Israel's response.
And then later, I was also in shock at how this was all playing out in American politics
and especially in American Jewish life.
There's one person I really wanted to help me think through the stuff I was hearing at synagogue and on Facebook
and in conversations with friends and family.
And so, I called Peter Beinart.
Peter is a fantastic writer,
and we've worked together on something like two dozen opinion pieces over the years.
And he's spent a long time thinking and writing,
not just about Israel and Palestinian rights,
but also about Zionism, anti–Zionism,
antisemitism, and American Jewish life.
We had a conversation that I found really, really helpful and clarifying.
