  • The topic we're going to talk about today, or I should say the topic we're going to argue about today is the importance of argument in politics.

  • Why in politics in particular?

  • Well, argument is something that I think we are inclined to do.

  • Generally.

  • We disagree, we try to figure things out, we try to evaluate each other's views.

  • But when we're talking about politics, particularly democratic politics, argument takes on a whole new significance.

  • Democracy is a lot of different things.

  • It's voting, it's campaigning, it's shaking hands and kissing babies.
