What is power?
It sounds as if it's one sort of thing, but Stephen Luke's of New York University thinks it has three dimensions.
Stephen Lukes, welcome to philosophy Bites.
Thank you.
The topic we're going to focus on is power.
Let's just begin by getting straight.
What is power?
Well, in the most general level, power is just the capacity to bring about consequences.
So if one Billy Ball hits another Billy ball, the consequence is the second one moves.
And that's a certain kind of power.
We're not going to talk about that.
We're talking about power in a social context.
Right.
And when we talk about power, we might mean the power to bring about consequences in a very general way.
Or we could talk about power of a person or a group of other persons and groups.
