  • It sounds as if it's one sort of thing, but Stephen Luke's of New York University thinks it has three dimensions.

  • The topic we're going to focus on is power.

  • Let's just begin by getting straight.

  • What is power?

  • Well, in the most general level, power is just the capacity to bring about consequences.

  • So if one Billy Ball hits another Billy ball, the consequence is the second one moves.

  • And that's a certain kind of power.

  • We're not going to talk about that.

  • We're talking about power in a social context.

  • Right.

  • And when we talk about power, we might mean the power to bring about consequences in a very general way.

  • Or we could talk about power of a person or a group of other persons and groups.
