  • Hello and welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • My guest today has taken an unusually long and winding route to fiction.

  • She was born in a small German-speaking community in Transylvania, moved to Sweden after the fall of communism,

  • trained as a macroeconomist and went on to work as a chief economist and advisor to Romania's prime minister and a writer

  • for the Economist Intelligence Unit.

  • In 2018, she took on a very different challenge,

  • restoring a heritage villa on the Greek island of Syros and turning it into a boutique hotel,

  • where she now spends much of her time when she 's not in London or Sweden.

  • Her debut novel, Under the Blue, was shortlisted for a number of book prizes.

  • Her new novel is Astronaut.

  • I was privileged enough to read this a few months ago before publication.

  • Since then, I have been recommending it to absolutely everybody.

  • This, I can assure you, is going to be a bestseller.

  • Moana Aristide, welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • Thank you very much, Georgina.

  • I'm honoured to be here.

  • Honestly, this book blew me away and I hardly ever say that.

  • Just to read, it's a second novel.

  • I mean, that in itself is unusual, right?
