Hello and welcome to Intelligence Squared, where great minds meet.
Im head of programming Connor Boyle on this episode, Doctor Hannah Durkin, a historian whose new book shines a light on the final years of the atlantic slave trade.
The Clotilda was the last slave ship to land on american soil in 1860.
This was despite a federal law banning the importation of captive individuals from the african continent, passed over a half a century prior.
Some of the survivors on board the Clotilda lived into the 20th century, a time period that feels shockingly close to our own.
Speaking to Durkin for this episode is Christina Fryer, the historian and broadcaster with a focus on modern Britain, the British Empire and modern Caribbean.
Fryer grew up in southeastern Virginia and has worked for universities in locations ranging from North Carolina to Liverpool.
Most recently, she was lecturer in black british history at Goldsmiths University in London.
Let's join Christina Fryer now with more.
Our guest today is Hannah Durkin.
Hannah is a historian specializing in transatlantic slavery and african diasporic art and culture.
