Theres rarely a week in which Donald Trump doesnt make the headlines, but the last few have been particularly potent.
With the former us president now officially a convicted felon, its an appropriate time then to ask ourselves once again how we got to this point.
And one voice who has been vocal in lamenting the transformation of the Republican Party into a vehicle for Trumps agenda is Robert Kagan.
Hes a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a historian and contributing columnist at the Washington Post.
Hes advised on policy for the US State Department and some of the republican partys most prominent voices in recent decades.
His latest book is how anti liberalism is tearing America apart again and its a reflection on the increasing radicalisation of the republican party.
Joining him in conversation to talk about it for this episode is Edward Loos.
Edward is chief us commentator for the Financial Times, based in Washington DC and author of books including the Retreat of Western Liberalism.
Lets join Edward now with more.
