4 分钟Hi there.
This is Harry.
And welcome back to our podcast where we look at certain aspects of english grammar relevant to those of you who are studying English up to and around the intermediate level.
It will apply to those beyond that because it's always good to get some revision aspects of grammar that you might have overlooked.
Okay, so, as always, I want to read this particular sentence twice, and then I'll explain to you the grammar points and the meaning behind the sentence, and hopefully you'll be able to understand it.
Okay, so here's the first reading.
Michael was cooking the dinner when he cut his finger.
Second reading, Michael was cooking the dinner when he cut his finger.
Again, it's a sentence with two clauses.
Here we're using when for the second clause.
Okay, so we've got an example.
Michael was cooking the dinner.
So that's telling us that he was in the middle of an action in the past.
In the middle of an action in the past.
So we can use past continuous.
It wasn't over.
It hadn't stopped.
He hadn't finished.
He was cooking.
He was in the middle of cooking when this accident happened.
