单集文稿 ...

  • Hi there, and this is Harry, back with you again.

  • And here's the continuation of our english grammar podcasts here.

  • I'm hoping to help you where you have some grammar problems, particularly for those of you learning grammar or English at the intermediate or slightly below that particular level.

  • It takes just a little bit of time.

  • You have to apply yourself, read it, practice and understand it.

  • And of course, if you need some help, it's always a good idea to get a teacher on a long term basis that can help you and preferably a native english speaker.

  • As always, I'm going to give you a sentence I'm going to read it to twice, and then I'm going to explain some of the grammar and vocabulary aspects of that particular sentence.

  • And if you wish to contact me and you have any points to ask, or indeed if there's something you want me to cover in particular in the future, then don't hesitate to contact me and my details are given at the end of this particular podcast.

  • Okay, so if you're ready, we'll begin.

  • And here is the sentence, and the first reading, she isn't ashamed of making mistakes when she speaks other languages, okay?

  • The second reading, she isn't ashamed of making mistakes when she speaks other languages.

  • Okay, so what does that mean and what grammar points have we got?

  • Well, in the previous podcast, we looked at the word blushed with embarrassment, and now we're using another word, sort of connected.

  • We're using the word ashamed.

  • Okay?

  • To be ashamed means to be embarrassed or upset that you've done something perhaps you shouldn't have done or said something perhaps that you shouldn't have said.

  • And often when you're learning a foreign language, as you people out there are learning English, you might be a little bit nervous about trying to speak English because you don't want to make mistakes.

  • Well, in this situation, this lady, she isn't ashamed of making mistakes when she speaks other languages, so she's willing to try.

  • So we could say she is not, put it quite formally, she is not.

  • Here, we're using the abbreviated format, if you remember that from some of the earlier podcasts, isn't isnashamed and we have of making mistakes, that's quite formal.
