5 分钟Hi there, this is Harry, and welcome back to the audio podcasts.
This is where we try to help you with the english language, in particular looking at aspects of grammar and other words, phrases and pronunciation where appropriate, particularly for those of you who are studying English at or around an intermediate level.
As always, we're going to take each sentence that I've prepared, going to read it twice, first one for you to get an understanding, and the second one to explain the particular points.
Also, if you have any questions or you'd like to ask me anything in particular to raise, by all means, contact me and my details will be given at the end of this particular podcast.
Okay, so if you're comfortable, we can begin.
Sentence number one and the first reading, travel in the city can be expensive, although the cheap saver tickets, especially for families, are a good idea.
Okay, second reading, travel in the city can be expensive, although the cheap saver tickets, especially for families, are a good idea.
Okay, so here I'm using the word travel as a noun, travel in the city.
I could say travelling in the city, and use it as a verb, so it works in both senses.
Either noun travel, t r a v e, or traveling, using it as a verb.
T r a v e l l I n g.
Travelling in the city.
Okay, here we're using the preposition in it's not on, you could say around the city.
That would be another preposition that you could use, which would be quite acceptable, but then I would have to say traveling around the city.
So travel in the city can be expensive.
So we're not saying it is expensive, so we're using the word can.
One of these modal verbs can usually means almost 100%, but you might find in some cities that it's not so expensive.
Okay, but here we're saying travel in the city can be expensive, okay, although here's one of these wonderful words that joins two clauses in the sentence, although.
And the pronunciation all th though, okay, get that?
Th sound a l t h o u g h.
