单集文稿 ...

  • Hi there.

  • This is Harry, and welcome back to my english podcast, where I try to help you with your understanding of certain phrases, expressions, and grammar points in the english language.

  • So today I have a number of strong adverbs, and I'm linking them with certain adjectives to give some collocations.

  • We've looked at some of these before.

  • These are different adverbs and adjectives, but the sense is the same.

  • Okay, so let me, let me start.

  • The first word is greatly.

  • So this is the adverb greatly.

  • And I've linked that with two adjectives, greatly exaggerated and greatly inconvenienced.

  • Greatly exaggerated and greatly inconvenienced.

  • The news that the president had resigned was greatly exaggerated.

  • Okay, so in fact, it wasn't true.

  • So somebody had spread a story or some gossip that the president had resigned, but that story proved to be false, what they call false news.

  • So it was greatly exaggerated.

  • Greatly inconvenienced is when somebody is delayed or something happens that caused them a lot of upset.

  • So instead of just saying inconvenienced, we can say greatly inconvenienced.

  • So if a plane is late, or a bus or a train, something that you need to get urgently to get you home, or to get you to an appointment, and it's delayed or cancelled due to weather or a breakdown or some problem with the schedule, then a number of passengers, including you, were greatly inconvenienced.

  • So you might write a letter of complaints to the company looking for some compensation.

  • And in that letter, you would say, well, I was greatly inconvenienced on that particular day because I had to get to an urgent meeting.

  • I was late, I was embarrassed, and it caused me some problems.
